The City police raided the clinic of Doctor Ramesh Chandra Swain in the Dhenkanal district and found an underground room in the building.  They were investigating if Swain carried out any medical procedures there illegally.

In 1997, Swain set up the clinic Sai Shree in Kamakhyanagar 1997 without having the requisite permission. On Saturday, raids were conducted but, police found only the caretaker, while all the other staff had fled the facility.

Swain started the clinic in a rented building in 1992-1993 in Kamakhyanagar by impersonating a doctor and made huge money by cheating unsuspecting patients. In 1997, he purchased land and set up a new building named Sai Shree to accommodate the clinic, which was operating and had 17 to 18 vacant rooms.

The 66-year-old Swain married at least 18 women across the country for financial gains. He used to shuttle between his wives by claiming that he had important meetings in different cities and mostly travelled in flights. But on interrogating, the accused said that he married just five women and the rest were staying with him willingly.

The three-day remand of Swain ended on the day.  He would be produced before a court on Monday. Commissionerate Police officers requested the court to grant them another seven-day remand for further questioning him. Swain was brought on remand twice after being arrested on February 14.

Special squad in-charge ACP Sanjeev Satpathy, who was leading the investigation and said they were using the reverse technique and tracing/contacting the victims to elicit information about him.
